Here's a look at one of our last newborn workshops! In this blog post, we'll be sharing some beautiful images we captured during one of our workshops, featuring one of the model babies, Hayes. Newborn photography is a special art form that requires patience, skill, and a keen eye for capturing those precious moments. Taking a newborn workshop is so important if you're considering becoming a newborn photographer.
The Importance of Taking a Newborn Workshop
Being a newborn photographer requires more than just a passion for capturing beautiful moments; it necessitates a deep understanding of the unique challenges and techniques inherent in this genre. Newborn workshops are essential for photographers aiming to hone their craft, as they offer a hands-on learning experience that cannot be replicated through self-study or online tutorials alone. It's not as easy as it looks!
During these workshops, attendees are introduced to the critical aspects of newborn safety, the importance of creating a soothing environment for the infant, and the art of posing delicate subjects with care and respect. Additionally, workshops provide invaluable insights into the use of studio lighting and angles to enhance the natural beauty of the newborn. The opportunity to watch a seasoned pro in a real-life setting, with expert guidance and immediate feedback, accelerates the learning process significantly. For photographers serious about excelling in newborn photography, participating in a workshop is a pivotal step in developing the expertise and confidence needed to produce images that families will cherish for a lifetime.
Meet Our Model Baby, Hayes
We typically photograph 2-3 newborns during our workshops, and Hayes was the 3rd baby for this worskhop. We had already covered all the poses in our workflow with the other two babies, so anything we got with him was extra! Most of the poses we showed on Hayes were ones that were requested by students.
The Final Touch: Post-Processing Newborn Images
Once the posing portion of the workshop wraps and we've captured those gorgeous images, we move on to post-processing. This stage is where the art of enhancing newborn photographs comes into play, aiming to complement the natural beauty of our subjects like Hayes. Our approach is to fine-tune the images delicately, focusing on subtle adjustments in lighting and color to ensure they appear as natural as possible. The secret is really to get everything right in camera so you're making very minimal adjustments in post. This tends to be a very popular segment among workshop attendees.
Interested in Taking a Workshop to Improve your Newborn Photography?
We decided to take 2024 off from teaching small group workshops at our studio in Urbandale, but we do offer online mentoring through our sister site, The Newborn Nerds and Newborn Nerds+. We also travel to conferences like Shutterfest every year to teach the art of newborn photography. If there's enough demand, we might bring local small group workshops back in 2025!
